High school basketball action from last night.
Class 5A No. 2 Salina Central girls 72, Great Bend 65, overtime
Both teams rallied from significant deficits to force overtime, before Salina Central closed overtime on a 9-0 run to get a 72-65 win at Great Bend.
Casey Knoth led the way with 26 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double in the 2016 calendar year. Elisa Backes added a career-high 19 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double. Maddie Nowlin had a career-high with nine points.
Central is 12-1 overall, while Great Bend drops to 8-5.
Class 5A No. 6 Salina Central boys 60, Great Bend 51
In a game that wasn’t as close as the final score would indicate, Salina Central dominated from the middle of the second quarter on in cruising to a 60-51 win at Great Bend.
J.D. McHenry led Central with 26 points, while Sam Shaffer added 13.
Central is 10-3 overall, while Great Bend drops to 3-10.
Southeast of Saline girls 60, Sacred Heart 19
SES opened the girls game on an 18-0 run and never looked back. Sacred Heart trailed 28-2 after the opening quarter and 44-7 at halftime. The Lady Trojans led 55-17 after three quarters and, with a running clock, went on for a blowout win.
Erica Montgomery led SES with 23 points. MaKenzie Kack scored 10 points for Sacred Heart.
The Knights are now 3-12 and 0-7 in the NCAA league. SES is 11-3 and 5-2.
Sacred Heart boys 57, Southeast of Saline 50
Sacred Heart fell behind in the fourth quarter 44-43, but once they reclaimed the lead, they hung onto it. SES was within 51-50, but Sacred Heart scored the last six points of the game to go on to the win.
Jerod Toogood led the Knights with 15 points. Easton Montgomery had a game-high 16 points for the Trojans.
Sacred Heart is now 15-0 and 7-0 in the NCAA league. SES is 11-3 and 5-2.
Ell-Saline Swept at Canton-Galva
Ell-Saline’s basketball teams were swept on Tuesday night at Canton-Galva.
The Canton-Galva girls picked up a 62-52 win on Ell-Saline, dropping the Cardinals at 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the Heart of America League.
The Canton-Galva boys defeated Ell-Saline 42-34, erasing a one-point halftime deficit with a 15-8 third quarter to take control. Ell-Saline is 1-13 overall and 0-4 in the HOA.
